I've had a new set of headers and sidepipes made and fitted as the ones that came with the car where …… less than perfect, shall we say. Poor fit which leaked on 4, 6 & 8 at the heads and poor weld quality.

Anyway here are some fotos of the new ones. Difficult to take shots of the headers themselves but really impressed with the fit, build and coating. They also have a slightly deeper tone to them which is quite nice.

They look very good Dale and I see that you’ve gone with the external joints. 👍🏻😊

What is the coating?

It's a ceramic coating. Camcoat was the company, I went for cam4 which is one internal coating to the headers and 3 coats on all exterior surface.

Yeah I went for the external joint to reduce any chance of fumes and heat inside the engine bay, which is something I suffered from with Daves old system.

Just need to get the old set on ebay now 🙂

I’d be interested to hear how well it stands up to the knocks and scrapes it will inevitably get, especially on the vends directly behind the front wheels where it will get shot-blasted by road debris.

Me too ... I hope it doesn't stay too nice too long :-). My old sides stood up well to the roads and that was only CAM 1 so I can only assume CAM 3 will be more durable

Looking lovely Dale - I have exhaust envy!

As those who have seen and heard my car of late, the exhaust and headers are an area of 'impending development' and the car's about to go into RH to hopefully be sorted, once and for all.  Assuming the headers are properly flush to the engine and are serviceable for future use, I'm investing in more substantial fasteners (as suggested by Roger), along with a beefier, metal based gasket and an appropriate sealant and we'll see what all that does.  As far as the exhaust system is concerned, that needs to be pulled apart and refitted, as it's currently sounding a little, how shall we say 'rattly'.

What do you mean by “more substantial fasteners” Lee?

There probably isn’t enough room to fit studs, so the best alternative is likely to be ARP header bolts of an appropriate length, which is what I’ve used and never had a problem with them.

Hi Paul,

From Roger's recent post...

'For aftermarket fabricated tubular headers, on aluminium heads, I have had great success using SCE copper embossed gaskets, sealed with copper exhaust RTV (orange), and Stage8 stainless fasteners.  These have a built in cam washer that engages on the hex head making it impossible for the fastener to turn and thus loosen.  Similarly the copper gasket does not 'relax' like an asbestos or composite joint so maintains a decent seal, assuming the surfaces are in good condition.  Available at all good Summit stores everywhere.'

It's not the 'substantiality' (um - is that a word?) of the Stage8s that stop them loosening, it's the design.  They've been on the Mustang's ceramic coated headers on ali heads for 15 years and 40,000 miles now without a single blown gasket (although those are solid copper).

I don't have them on the Cobra, because that has the original black finish Fastenal 12 points with the correct anti-lock washers.  These come loose regularly, but that's original - they were always loose in period, and of course they bolt into cast-iron heads.

I'm all about these, Roger - anything that will alleviate the current exhaust blows, loss of power, potential for asphyxiation, then that's good enough for me!  Update to follow...
