I’ve been asked about intercom systems by a number of fellow members recently.

Driving a Cobra any distance is pretty unkind to your hearing and I’m sure many of you have experienced ringing in your ears for hours or even days after a long journey. It isn’t so much the noise as the wind buffeting that causes the problems and potentially long term damage.

Selina and I have been using an intercom with over-ear headsets for 5-6 years whenever we’re in the Cobra, even if I’m on my own and I wouldn’t consider driving more than a few miles without them.

We’ve tried a number of different systems and the best so far is the Stilo DG-10 with their WRC headsets. Stilo are used by most of the WRC and off-shore powerboat race crews so they have excellent credentials.

The DG-10 is a single unit that simply needs a 12v feed and includes all of the controls on large easy to use buttons. It also comes with Bluetooth so you can listen to music, answer your mobile and hear your satnav. It also has active noise-cancelling with 4 level settings.

There is also a Stage setting, which disables the Bluetooth, but we’ve never used that.

The WRC headsets are of the over-ear variety with a boom mic, so they keep out all the direct wind buffeting. They allow you to hold an easy conversation with your passenger, even in my louder than average 427.

My only comment is that the mics do pick up wind noise when driving at motorway speeds, so I’m going to fit some better quality wind muffs to see if that helps.

I found Nicky Grist Motorsports to be the most helpful.

I hope some of you find that useful.

Would this sort of unit be able to connect with a “walkie talkie” for car to car communication?

thanks

Hi Simon,

Yes, there are a could of ports to allow the connection of external devices, like a radio.
